Turi Simeti

1929 - Italy

Turi Simeti (Italian, b.1929) is a painter affiliated with Spatialism and the ZERO group. Born in Alcamo in Sicily, Simeti moved to Rome in 1958, and became active in the art scene after meeting well-known Art Informel painter and sculptor Alberto Burri.

Throughout the 1960s, Simeti participated in numerous exhibitions, including an exhibition of ZERO artists held in the studio of Lucio Fontana, which solidified his position in the group. He became known for his minimalistic monochrome paintings comprised of different shapes, in particular, ovals, which play on ideas of light, color, and surface movement.

His work has been shown extensively in galleries and museums worldwide, such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, and is included in prominent collections, including the MAM in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; the Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bolzano in Italy; and the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

Simeti currently lives and works in Milan.
